Submissions

We at the WMCC are always looking for new materials from our members or website visitors. Constantly updated photos, stories, articles and other content are what keeps people coming back to a website. But we can't do it without help from YOU! So if you have some photos of your buddy flailing around on his latest V-whatever project or a short story about a memorable climbing experience, we would love to put it on our website to share with everyone. It doesn't even have to be extensive; perhaps you heard a funny quote when you were belaying a friend or drew a climbing related cartoon when you should have been studying for your midterm. It doesn't matter...we want it! So... go ahead... send it in! You'll not only be supporting the arts but you'll also be supporting Western Massachusetts rock climbing!

General Guidelines

By submitting material to the WMCC you are giving the WMCC license to use the material for any purpose it deems appropriate.

  • Keep it clean: No photos or artwork of questionable taste. The Vulgarians did it but we don't have to. Also, please leave out the profanity in any printed material. This site is viewed by people of all ages and all walks of life. No need to offend anyone.
  • Be nice: Please don't send us photos that might be embarrassing to the subject. A photo on a webpage can be viewed by anyone from anywhere in the world. Some people find this to be rather unsettling so please respect their feelings.
  • Be original: Please don't submit a quote that you read in the "Overheard" section of Climbing magazine. Don't "borrow" a photo from another website and ask us to display it on this site. Stealing copyrighted materials is not only wrong; it is also illegal.
  • Give credit: If you've been given permission to submit material that isn't your own, please give credit where credit is due.
  • Be relevant: Not every photo needs to show someone climbing and not every story has to be about your latest send but your submission should be related to rock climbing at least by some reasonable stretch of the imagination.
  • Be creative: Now that we've told you what you can't do... the rest is up to you!

Submitting Digital photos

Files with the following extensions are acceptable for submission:

.jpg ---This is the most common file format for photos. Most digital cameras will save photos in this format.

.psd ---Photoshop documents are fine but please flatten any layers before sending

.tif ---Not as common but TIFF files compress nicely without losing image quality.

.bmp ---This format is ok too.

File size: There is no hard and fast rule for file size since we never know exactly how big a picture should be until we're ready to use it. A large file size is generally preferable because we can always make it smaller to use on the web, whereas a file that is too small will display poorly if it is enlarged.

Digital Cameras: If your photos are from a digital camera and they are in one of the above formats (.jpg for example) they are probably fine. Just send them in using the instructions below.

Scanned Photos: Here's what I do. You can use this as a general guideline but don't go and re-scan all your images if what you have is a little different. I scan my WMCC photos so that the final image is 300 pixels x 450 pixels at 150 pixels/inch (or 450 x 300 for landscape orientation). This gives me an image that will print out nicely at 2 inches by 3 inches if I want to use it for a brochure or other printed material and is also plenty big enough to make it look great on the website.

Submit by email: The easiest way to submit photos is by email. Just open up your default email program by clicking the following link and attach your photos. webmaster@westernmacc.com

In order for us to better organize your photos and make them more meaningful to our website visitors please include some information about each one using the following form. You can even copy this form to the text area of your email. Just select the form by clicking and dragging your mouse, then, right click and choose Copy. Submitting Sculpture

We realize that you've probably spent hours creating that sculpture of Half Dome out of Roasted Garlic Hummus and chalk dust. Unfortunately, the WMCC has no means of displaying it in a way that would allow the true glory of your creation to shine. Sorry. Try some of the galleries in Northampton.
